It depends on how much space you have above and below your screen.
Center speaker above projector screen.
Ideally the center channel speaker should go where it s closest to your ear level when seated.
If so angle the speaker up toward your ears.
Center speakers fit great on top of an entertainment cabinet or easily on a shelf mounted above or below the tv screen.
My screen with frame is 52 tall with about 28 above and 24 below my eye level.
Thanks for the replies.
Madmac i m in the market for a 1080p projector.
The ideal is to have the centre speaker behind the screeen but this is only viable if using an acoustically transparent pj screen.
If using a projector and an acoustically transparent projection screen installing the center speaker at ear height behind the screen makes for ideal placement.

I might see a little pixelization at 12 with a 120 screen but i m thinking it won t be too bad as that s right on the cusp of pixelization according to.
The position of the center channel should be based on the position of the right and left tweeters.
The screen was about 7 8 feet wide and when both centres were used the voices came from the centre of the screen not from below it.
Place the center speaker above of below the tv where the tweeter is closer to the tweeters of the right and left speakers.
Whether you have the centre above or below is a compromise and neither is better than the other.
It is probably more applicable to projector screens but i have heard the difference between a single centre below the screen and a centre below and above the screen.
Center speakers work great placed on top of an entertainment center or on a shelf mounted above or below the tv screen.
The sound comes from the screen sound effects and dialog are both typically produced by the center left and right front channel speakers.
More than likely that will be below your screen.
